Over the years, most refrigeration equipment manufacturers moved away from valves, sight glasses, and filter-driers with flare connections.
However, the aforementioned are still common on MINI/Multi Split systems and VRV/VRF systems.
What does this mean for you?
It simply means that the tendency for your systems to leak is still a common dilemma for individuals in the industrial refrigeration industry.
Why do they leak?
Despite your best efforts to install an efficient system, leaks happen to everyone and every type of equipment.
But there are ways to fix refrigerant leaks, once you understand what caused them in the first place.
The most common reasons for refrigerant leaks include:
- Flare is too small
- Ridge on the flare
- Sealant on threads
- Leaking and/or missing Schrader caps
- Missing TEV adjustment cap
- Leaking neoprene o-rings
How to prevent refrigerant leaks
Although leaks may occur, there are ways to prevent them by routine periodic inspections of your system and equipment.
As a good preventative measure against large refrigerant losses in larger industrial systems, monthly leak checks can be instituted to catch leaks before they become cataclysmic.
Additionally, when checking for leaks in a larger application, be sure to check the entire system even if only one or two leaks are found in the early stage of the leak check. There may be more, and it’s best to find them and fix them all at one time.
Larger systems are more likely to develop multiple leaks, further apart. While in a smaller unit, multiple leaks are more likely to be closer to one another. But every leak still must be precisely located and fixed.
